Artist Profile
Peer Kriesel
Born in Berlin in 1979, Peer Kriesel’s artistic journey began as a creative force in the world of advertising. Today, he primarily channels his creativity as an artist and freelance designer in Berlin.
Kriesel’s work delves into the complex theme of identity and values in the era of digital transformation and digital society. His creations reflect the overload, particularly in the context of the internet and social media and the resulting societal confusion. Themes such as political disillusionment, influenced by war and a sense of lacking solidarity, as well as the conflict between traditional values and the allure of the new and beautiful, are all central to Kriesel’s artistic exploration.
His „Fratzen“ (grimaces), intricate tableaus and overpainting characterise his work. Geometric shapes appear to divide and partially obscure the world of figures, while highlighting others. These geometric elements serve as both disorienting and sometimes harmonizing, providing ample room for interpretation within the context of data overflow, digitalization and migration.
Kriesel’s „ME SO SMALL“ installations, using walls or objects like rare car models, might initially seem like acts of vandalism. He applies gestural strokes to create grimace drawings on the wall or model. This action devalues the precious object and yet, simultaneously elevates it to art. It’s this inherent contradiction that captivates the artist. In an age where the production and consumption of creative works or „beautiful“ things has become almost obsessive, the collective value system is shifting. Using the wall on-site as his creation, Kriesel counteracts the fast-paced times with a permanent installation.
The abstracted „Fratzen“ in the „FRTZNABSTRCTN“ series are created by using calligraphic lines in multiple layers and dimensions, reflecting the ever accelerating and increasingly abstract nature of the world.
Kriesel’s overpainted sea and land maps, as well as city plans, constitute his latest body of work. These maps, usually the canvas for Kriesel’s characteristic overpainting’s, are now rendered on a grand scale, transforming the delicate and intricate details into an almost infinite swarm of information.
