Artist Profile

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fabian Hemmert

Fabian Hemmert, has embarked on a creative journey that reimagines the relationship between art and humanity. Born with an insatiable passion for exploring the depths of human existence, Fabian’s work serves as a bridge between the individual and societal dynamics of human existence in an era dominated by technology.

Fundamental questions shape his work: What defines our humanity? How can art aid us in understanding ourselves better? And how can art itself be redefined? At the core of his art lies a quest to understand the essence of being human. He sparks profound introspection. Fabian revels in challenging established norms and perceptions.

Fabian’s art is a departure from the conventional. His paintings are interactive artifacts designed to guide viewers‘ attention inward, towards their unique reactions to his creations. With this approach, he bridges the gap between people and art, challenging the notion that art is often perceived as something intellectual, elitist and remote. He views art as a distinct facet of humanity that sets us apart from machines and animals, striving to encourage as many people as possible to experience, confront and enjoy art.

The creative process of Fabian’s art extends far beyond the physical creation of the artwork. It truly comes alive when a viewer engages with the piece. Different art movements have inspired him, including Abstract Expressionism, Post-Minimalism, and Nouveau réalisme. Fabian, like many artists of the New Realism movement, incorporates various materials into his canvases, combining colours and textures in a neo-expressionist style.

His creative process resembles meditation, where he observes the resulting aesthetics without judgement. There is no right or wrong. This artistic philosophy is, in part, influenced by Roland Barthes‘ concept of the „Death of the Author.“ Instead of merely signing his works, he stamps the back with the statement, „I did not think anything while creating this painting.“ Each canvas bears an indelible mark, signifying that it was painted without any intention.

In the presence of a notary, Fabian signs a certificate asserting that he created the artwork without any artistic intent. This document, complete with his notarized signature, becomes an integral part of each piece. It also extends an invitation to viewers to discover their own personal meanings within the artwork.

By officially declaring his paintings as devoid of artistic intent, Fabian refrains from imposing his interpretation onto the viewer’s reaction. The seemingly abstract „Krickelkrackel“ paintings encouraging viewers to become an integral part of the artwork itself, fostering introspection and self-discovery.

He presented his work at multiple visionary events, including TED, CeBIT, Lift, the Chaos Communication Congress, the EuroVision TV Summit, and SXSW
